Jewell Dean Herbrandson Stokes, 97 May 13, 1928 – December 18, 2025

Jewell Dean Herbrandson Stokes passed away peacefully at home in Auburn, Washington, on December 18, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family. She was 97.

Born in 1928 in North Central Oklahoma, Jewell Dean’s life was a testament to faith, creativity, and compassion. She received her education in Seventh-day Adventist boarding schools and pursued her passion for the arts through a variety of art programs, laying the foundation for a life rich in expression and service.

Jewell Dean was the beloved daughter of Noble Werner and Laura Malugen, and was lovingly raised by her father and stepmother, Iva Anthis Werner. She was a cherished sister to MaryAnn Lyons, RoseMarie Borchers (who preceded her in death in 2017), SharonLee Nicholson, and Noble Werner, Jr. (who preceded her in death in 2025).

Jewell Dean married Roderic Herbrandson in 1947, with whom she shared a devoted marriage until his passing in 1981. In 1994, she found love again and married Frank Stokes, who passed away in 2000.

Throughout her life, Jewell Dean wore many hats with grace and dedication: a nurturing parent, an inspiring teacher, a gifted professional artist, and a passionate small business owner. She poured her heart into her art studio and later into running a warm and welcoming bed and breakfast, where guests were treated like family.

A lifelong member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Jewell Dean was deeply involved in every congregation she joined. Her faith was not only a personal compass but also a guiding light in her community work. She was especially committed to providing safe shelter and support for women in crisis, embodying her belief in love, dignity, and service to others.

Jewell Dean’s legacy is one of faith, family, and fierce compassion. Her life touched many, and her memory will continue to inspire those who knew and loved her.

Jewell Dean is survived by her siblings Mary Ann Lyons and Sharon Lee Nicholson, children Rod (Marlene) Herbrandson, Beverly (Carl) Koester, and Gerald (Deloris) Herbrandson, grandchildren Jacinda (David) Alfred (Jared, Isaac), Eric (Rebecca) Koester (Hadassah, Elias), Melinda (Don) Wheeler, Delinda Herbrandson (Justen), Leif (Abegail) Koester (Julia, Shane), Tyana Herbrandson (Chayse), Lonnie (Gillian) Herbrandson, and Letaru Koester (Ayikoru, Israel), Nieces and nephews Larry (Donna) Brown, Heidi Marie (Robby) Borchers-Wood, Shellidawn Carrol, Gary (Louise) Babcock, Trisha Lee Link, MehriAnna Nicholson, Noble Werner, and Charles Werner, as well as scores of great nieces, nephews and other beloved extended relatives.

Condolences

I share my condolences for "Grammy", as Tyana's high school boyfriend. I remember visiting "Grammy" in her home in Washington and was so happy when she took Tyana to Norway to visit me for Christmas break of Tyana's senior year. I did not get much time with "Grammy" out of her long 97 years and can testify to her kind and caring personality for the precious little time I could share with her. May her rest be sweet till the day she rises to see her Maker! Love from, Luke Carambot
