Obituary For Margaret H. Douglass

Margaret H. Douglass was born November 6, 1930, in Centralia, Washington, to Pastor Fred and Louise (Heinz) Lucas. She was baptized and confirmed at her father’s church, Immanuel Lutheran. She graduated from Centralia High School in 1948, and then attended Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, where she graduated summa cum laude in 1952. After graduation, she taught school in Chehalis. In 1954, she married Ron Douglass, whom she had met at PLU. Together they moved to New York where Ron earned a master’s degree from Columbia University and Margaret taught in the White Plains school district. After they returned to Washington state, she taught in the Fife school district before starting a family.

Margaret was deeply invested in serving others. Active in both church and community, she served at Messiah Lutheran Church as Sunday School superintendent and a longtime teacher. She sang in the Messiah Lutheran choir for over 50 years. At home, she could often be heard playing piano. Margaret made quilts and health kits for Lutheran World Relief and took part in bible study, social ministry and synod activities. She placed a high value on education and regularly volunteered in her sons’ elementary school classrooms. She was a devoted representative of American Bible Society for 33 years and faithfully volunteered for the Auburn Respite Adult Day Care Program until her early 80s. At the Auburn YMCA, Margaret served as a board member, an exercise instructor, and helped with the YMCA Partners for Youth campaigns. She also served in civic government, working on the Auburn Beautification Committee and the Auburn Centennial Commission. Besides family, she had a special love for children, gardening, and music. Spending time with her grandchildren was especially important to her. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband Ron in 2016. She is survived by her sons, Mark (Teresa), David and Peter (Janine), and her grandchildren Bethany, Andrew (Anna), Paul, Rachel, Taylor (Brian) and Luke. She had three great-grandchildren: Atticus, Sofia, and Jack, all of whom she adored.

Memorial Services will be held at Messiah Lutheran Church, on December 7th at 2pm. The burial will be at Tahoma National Cemetery in Covington, WA.
