“Just a poor farm boy from Oklahoma”. That was one of Duane Nugent’s favorite sayings. Marvin Duane Nugent passed away on May 6, 2018 at the age of 79 in Tacoma.
Duane was born on December 19, 1938 in Ripley, Oklahoma. At the age of three, his family moved to the Yakima Valley in Washington. He attended school in Granger and Zillah, graduating from Zillah High School in 1956.
He attended Yakima Valley College and then the University of Washington, graduating in 1960. In 1959 he married Kay Summers in Toppenish. Kay and Duane had three children.
Duane worked at Boeing for nearly 30 years, mostly as a Buyer and Materiel Manager. In 1990, he left Boeing to join his brother Paul as an owner at Scott & From.
Duane loved life. Of course, he enjoyed traveling and sports. But he also loved children. He had a perfect record guessing the gender of babies. He loved holding babies and toddlers and loved singing and playing with older children. He was known for his rendition of “I know an Old Lady that Swallowed a Fly”.
Duane is preceded in death by his son Ric Nugent, his parents Vern & Lena Nugent, and his brothers Paul Nugent and Neal Nugent. He is survived by his wife Kay, son and daughter-in-law Doug & Karen Nugent, daughter Kristin Nugent, grandchildren Holly (Mitsu) Saito, Julie (Dave) Lim, Steven Nugent, Garett Nugent, Kaylin Nugent, and great-grandchildren Miki, Lainie and Kai. He also loved his extended grandchildren, Michael, Stephanie, Estevan, Greg, Liz, JT, Emily, Derek, Ben and Everly.
A Celebration of Duane’s life will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2018 from 1 to 4 pm at the Center at Norpoint, located at 4818 Nassau Ave. NE in Tacoma. For the great care he received at St. Joseph’s Hospital, please donate to the Franciscan Foundation at www.chifranciscan.org, in lieu of flowers.
